What are transparent aligners?

Transparent aligners are also referred to as ‘clear’ or ‘invisible’ aligners. These invisible braces are a modern orthodontic treatment, designed to discreetly straighten your teeth. They consist of a series of transparent, removable trays that are custom-made to fit your teeth. Every two weeks, you switch to a new set of aligners, with each one gently guiding your teeth step by step toward their desired position. Because the aligners are almost invisible and can be removed when eating, drinking, or brushing, they offer a comfortable and convenient alternative to traditional braces. However, they might not be the best orthodontics solution for every patient.

Clear aligners: your comfortable and flexible solution?

You sensed it right: there is a small catch to transparent aligners’ flexibility. Because they can easily be removed, they are not for everyone. The main group to whom we recommend other orthodontic treatments, are children. From our youngest patients, we cannot expect the discipline to always put the clear aligners back in after each meal. This also goes for some adolescents and even adult patients, to whom we always emphasize the required routine of reinstalling the aligners.

Transparent aligners faq: your questions and answers

We are always willing to answer all your questions about orthodontic treatments, so feel free to contact us. To ease your quest for information, we’ve collected the most frequently asked questions about transparent aligners and provided them with answers.

Do transparent aligners hurt?

Clear aligners don’t hurt when placed, but you may feel mild pressure or soreness in the first few days as your teeth begin to move. This is normal, temporary, and usually easy to manage with over-the-counter pain relief. Most patients adapt quickly as their mouth adjusts.

Are invisible aligners expensive?

Although affordability is relative to each person, we try to keep invisible aligners affordable for everyone. We offer our ClearAligner System for approximately €750,- for one jaw, and €1300,- for upper and lower jaw. Prices include btw (Dutch VAT) but exclude orthodontist fees. Please be advised that prices may vary over time. You will receive a personal quote for the full treatment plan.

Does my insurance cover transparent aligners?

Many Dutch insurance plans offer partial coverage for clear aligner treatment. Children under 18 with supplementary dental insurance are usually covered. For adults, coverage is usually more limited, but there are plans that include orthodontics. At our orthodontic practice in Amsterdam, we can check this for you. If your insurance provides coverage, we will bill them directly, and you will only be responsible for the mandatory co-payment.

How does a transparent aligner treatment work at Zwielich?

The entire treatment is carefully planned in advance by our orthodontist, using specialized aligner software. With this software, your teeth are virtually moved on-screen to their optimal positions, and you’ll receive a 3D simulation showing the before-and-after results. This way, you can see exactly how straight your teeth will become.

Unlike many other orthodontic or dental practices, we manage the entire aligner process in-house, from scanning your teeth and planning in the software to producing the invisible aligner trays. This way, we can respond quickly if anything goes wrong. For example, if you lose a tray, we’ll prepare a replacement promptly, which wouldn’t be possible if the production were outsourced to an external provider.

How long must I wear the transparent aligners?

You should wear your invisible braces for about 20 to 22 hours a day. Each set is typically worn for 1 or 2 weeks before moving on to the next, until your teeth reach their ideal position.
